Sofia’s Mind Pori
An unidentified female patient is living in the psychiatric hospital. This small woman was found on a rooftop in Pori, nearly frozen to death. The nearly 60-year-old lady with a delicate face is a mystery, because nobody recognizes her and she recognizes nobody. Not knowing her real name, the staff at the hospital call her Sofia.
Sofia is in a nearly catatonic state, showing no emotions nor reacting normally to the outside world. The psychiatrists at the hospital have diagnosed her to be suffering from prolonged, untreated schizophrenia, which has now due to some traumatic event further distanced her mind from other people. Establishing contact with Sofia is nearly impossible. She can still talk, however. “The most important one is safe, the most important one is safe, the most important one is safe”, seems to be the only sentence that she is able to repeat. She can be heard repeating the sentence multiple times daily, in the same monotonous flat tone.
There is one other reaction that Sofia is capable of. The nurses have noticed that when Sofia is confronted with a mirror, she reacts with intense fear. She begins crying and screaming in panic. The nurses can’t even fathom what horrors Sofia sees in the mirror in addition to herself.
Sofia’s face has been posted in the local papers for a long time in order to find out more about her. Finally, this approach seems to have worked: a person working nearby reports having seen a woman who looked like Sofia walking into an apartment nearby a few days before Sofia was found. So, we may have finally found the door and lock that match the key found in Sofia’s pocket. Is there information in the apartment about Sofia’s family, so they could be contacted? What does she mean by “the most important one” and what is the threat?
Sofia’s mind - what is so scary?
